Embedding SDGs in Consumer Practices: Moving Beyond Responsibilizing Individuals

Autor: Claudia González, Alison Joubert, Daiane Scaraboto

Shifting consumer behaviour to be more responsible in ways that benefit both society and the environment is increasingly vital. Yet, interventions by governments and businesses worldwide often focus primarily on individual consumers and place excessive burdens on them to drive change through their consumption practices. While these efforts are well-intentioned, they can have unintended consequences that can undermine the success of the interventions and disrupt the path to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We provide a select review of the foundational behavioural approaches to consumption, identifying the challenges with responsibilizing individuals with the full weight of the change. Using plastic as an example, we discuss how and why consumers resist being responsibilized, and provide insights into who should be responsible for changing the world for the better. Finally, we draw on practice-theoretical understandings to demonstrate a way forward and provide an agenda for future research in the area.
