Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone was the founder of the Order of Friars Minor, the Poor Ladies, and the Third Order of Seculars during the Middle Ages. Of wealthy origin, he lived in strict poverty and in adherence to the Gospel. His religious life was austere and simple, and he encouraged his followers to do the same. He was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1228.
